How old were you when you first saw E.T.? If you're like a lot of people at the time, you were a child. Do you remember how it felt? Do you remember how the film evoked that sense of wonder that so few children's films these days can do?
Super 8 is to adults what E.T. was to children back in the day - it continues the mystery and the wonder of discovery for the E.T. generations all grown up.
If you missed Super 8's run through the theatres, you should really track it down. Most stores carry it, but if you aren't sure whether or not you want to own it, services like www.satellitetv-hq.com have been known to carry it on their movie channels.
The plot is pretty simple. A train transporting a mysterious creature crashes in a sleepy town (where nothing ever happens) and a group of friends become embroiled in a mysterious government cover-up. All this, while dealing with the social horrors of adolescence and falling in love.
It's classic coming-of-age genius mixed with a very real and very dangerous mystery that threatens to destroy a peaceful town. It's Abrams's call back to early Steven Spielberg, and Abrams at his utter best.
